Lighting Control Application Manchester Stadium

Over the years, More Control has provided systems to control the lighting and power monitoring at various facilities across the UK. Most notably, More Control has supplied systems for various industrial buildings and many famous sporting stadiums including Manchester Stadium and Wembley Stadium.

As energy costs have steadily increased, there is a growing need in the market to accurately monitor energy use to get the most out of a buildings resource. Furthermore, changing regulations for energy consumption and power monitoring have also led to changing ways that building structures are designed and resourced.

The lighting control system that was installed at Manchester Stadium was part of a robust system, controlled locally via switches and touch screens and networked back to PC's which provide enhanced functionality, such as building wide scene control and scheduling.

Using PC based lighting controls enabled different lighting solutions to be programmed for multiple uses and functions. As well as greater flexibility; the PC based solution offered greater economy, switching on only those lights which are necessary in the areas required and for the correct allocated time.

Manchester Stadium

More Control were responsible for the software used for the Clipsal C-Bus lighting management system for Manchester City Stadium, nominated for the 20th Anniversary "Best of the Best" British Construction Industry Awards in 2007.

The installation of the lighting control system was part of a joint collaboration between Clipsal and More Control's IT Company, More Solutions (formally know as Quarella Ltd at the time). The flexibility of the lighting control software implemented enabled different lighting and power solutions to be programmed for different uses and events for the stadium.

Manchester Stadium was built in two different stages. For the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium had a seating capacity of around 38,000 and included a temporary North Stand which was removed after the games.

The removal of the North Stand allowed for an additional tier of seating and a football pitch to be built below the level of the running track that was used for the games. With the completion of the replacement North Stand, the seating capacity was increased to 48,000 to meet the needs of the Manchester City Football Club.

Only a short period of commissioning work was required on the completion of the redevelopment with the software substantially unchanged from the version used throughout the Games. From the outset, the lighting control system was designed to cater for both stages of the build of the stadium to ensure that correct lighting and energy consumption was optimised.

Overall, the lighting control system that was installed allows the Manchester City Stadium to have complete flexibility over how they wish to regulate and control their lighting. The lighting system ensures that the stadium can be more energy efficient to control light level levels depending upon the requirements of a given event.
